The High Atlas

Snow above, green below

An hour from Marrakech the road climbs into the Atlas. Pine and juniper on the slopes, a river in the valley floor, and snow on the summits well into spring.

Villages built of earth

South of the mountains the land turns red. Earthen kasbahs climb the hillsides above palm groves and river beds that fill for half the year.

The Sahara

The wind writes on the sand

Walk out of camp in the morning and the dunes are freshly rippled by the night wind. No footprints but yours.

Sunset

The light turns gold

An hour before dark the shadows stretch across the dunes and the heat goes out of the day. Climb a ridge and you have the evening to yourselves.

Then the stars come out

No towns and no light, only the camp and a sky you'll talk about at home. Tomorrow is yours to plan.

The road

Morocco is best seen from the road

In one week you can stand in snow on an Atlas pass, drink mint tea in an earthen village and fall asleep in the dunes. The country changes every few hours. We plan the drive so you see it happen: the right roads, the right stops, and nights in places worth waking up in.

Pick your terrain

Where do you want to wake up?

Sandboards standing in the dunes as the sun goes down

Sahara

Camel rides, sandboarding and nights at a camp in the dunes.

Snowy Atlas peaks above a green mountain village

Mountains

High passes, Berber villages and waterfalls in green valleys.

Red cliffs above a wide Atlantic beach

Coast

Fishing ports, sea walls and long Atlantic beaches to walk.

A shaded souk lane lined with leather bags, lamps and textiles

Medinas

Old walled cities, busy souks and the blue streets of the north.

Questions

Before you write to us

Are the tours private or shared?

A trip we plan around you is private: the car and the driver are for your group alone. Each ready-made tour says on its page how it runs.

Can we change the route?

Yes. Each tour is a starting point. Add a night, swap a stop or slow the whole thing down, and we price the new plan before you confirm.

When is the best time to go?

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for the desert and the mountains. Summer suits the Atlantic coast. Winter is bright and quiet, but desert and mountain nights get cold, so pack warm layers. Our month-by-month guide has the details.

How much driving is there?

Most days have 3 to 5 hours on the road, broken up with stops. A few long days, mostly to and from the desert, run 6 to 7 hours. Every tour page shows the driving time for each day, and our guide to the road from Marrakech to Merzouga walks through a typical route.

What are the desert camps like?

Tented camps among the dunes, with dinner by the fire and a sky full of stars. Facilities differ from camp to camp, so ask us and we'll tell you exactly what yours has, from beds to bathrooms. Still choosing a desert? Read Merzouga or Zagora.

Is Morocco safe to travel around?

Violent crime against visitors is rare. The usual hassle is in busy medinas, and travelling with someone who knows the place takes most of it away. Check your government's travel advice before you go, such as the UK Foreign Office advice for Morocco (opens in a new tab) or the US State Department page (opens in a new tab).
